Sextortion is intentional conduct which includes manipulation, blackmail or coercion in order to make the victim to perform sexual activities for the benefit of the abuser and / or take sexually explicit pictures/videos that the victim is forced to send to the abuser.

While the abuser may use the threat to distribute such images or videos, it is equally common for the coercion used to include threats to harm the victim's family or friends if they do not engage in the requested sexual activity.

The motivation of the abuser can be revenge, humiliation or financial gain. Abusers are often current or former partners, but they can be strangers or online acquaintances.

There are cases of sexual extortion in which the abuser is an unknown person and a serial abuser attacking victims in different countries. They often use a variety of ICT means, including hacking, creating multiple fake identities on social networks, intercepting private communications, and the like.
