Applying the principle of gender equality to local public policies

The two-day international conference "Implementing the principle of equality at the local level - good examples from the EU" gathered on 26-28 November at the "Park" hotel in Split, around 50 representatives of local authorities, local and regional Gender Equality Commissions, political parties and civil society organizations that promote women's rights, as well as guests from EU countries, Magali Giovannangeli, Deputy Mayor of Aubagne, France, and Prof. Dr. Irena Ateljević, Wageningen University, the Netherlands.

After the introductory words of the organizers and the welcoming speech of Anđelka Visković, Deputy Mayor of the City of Split, the topic of gender-aware policy at the local level was discussed by Gordana Sobol, President of the Gender Equality Committee of the Croatian Parliament, M.Sc. Suzana Kunac, Babe, Zagreb, and Member of Parliament of the Republic of Croatia, Vesna Pusić. Magali Giovannangeli and Irena Ateljević elaborated on experiences in the field of gender equality and women's human rights at the global level.

On this occasion, the results of legal and sociological research and analysis of gender policies in the City of Split were presented, which were carried out as part of the project by "Dominoes" in cooperation with the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Philosophy in Split and Prof. Dr. Anča Leburić.

The parallel workshop sessions on the second day of the conference, led by Irena Ateljević, Magali Giovannangeli, Valerija Barada (Department of Sociology, Faculty of Philosophy in Zadar) and Mirjana Kučer ("Dominoes", project manager), covered the topics of women in the local community as bearers of sustainability; tradition, culture and awareness of others, and the integration of the principle of gender equality into public policies - locally and globally.

The international conference "Application of the principle of equality to local public policies - good examples from the EU" is part of the project "Creation of new models for improving the position of women in society and integrating gender policies into local public policies in the city of Split" which "Domine" is implementing in 2008/2009. in the framework of the Phare 06 program for Croatia "Facilitating the active contribution of the civil society sector in the pre-accession process of democratization and human rights", financed by the EU.
