Reaction to allegations appearing in a series of articles by journalist Jelena Jindra on the H-Alter portal entitled "A system for protection or for child abuse?"

In our daily work, we witness that victims are often afraid to report violence, and a growing reason for fear of reporting is precisely the fear that institutions will accuse them of "alienation" and take their child away if they try to protect themselves from the abuser.

In the last two months, a series of articles by journalist Jelena Jindra entitled “A system for protection or for child abuse?” has been published on the H-alter portal.https://h-alter.org/ljudska-rights/system-for-protection-or-for-child-abuse/). Given that the articles in question by journalist Jindra present the testimonies of several women who warn of possible significant omissions and irregularities in the work of institutions that play an extremely important role in a large number of cases of violence committed within the family, we believe that it is necessary to investigate the validity of the same.

Letter Reaction of civil society organizations, which further argues our reaction and requests from the competent institutions, we sent to the Government of the Republic of Croatia, the Ministry of Labor, Pension System, Family and Social Policy, the Ministry of Justice and Administration, the Croatian Parliament, the Croatian Psychological Chamber, the Croatian Chamber of Social Workers, the Ombudsman for Gender Equality and the Ombudsman for Children.
Our demands are:
– that relevant state institutions and professional chambers seriously examine the allegations in the article and conduct an investigation into whether the rights of children and/or persons who have experienced violence in a partner relationship have been violated
– that the Ministry of Labor and Pension System, Family and Social Policy and the Ministry of Justice and Administration urgently organize education and professional training for persons involved in the systems providing support and protecting the rights of victims of violence, with an emphasis on understanding gender-based violence
– urgent reform of the social welfare system, which will, among other things, include improving the working conditions of employees, ensuring lifelong learning, education and supervision for employees, restructuring the system with the necessary new hiring of experts
– a strategic approach and intensive work to increase the sense of trust that citizens, including victims of violence, have in the justice and social welfare system, which will include changes to existing practices and external independent controls
– expanding the network and strengthening institutions that carry out complete diagnostic and treatment work with children and young people, especially when it comes to victims of violence, and ensuring their uniform territorial distribution
