Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Liberian peace activist Leymah Gbowee and Yemeni journalist and activist Tavakol Karman have won this year's Nobel Peace Prize "for their fight for women's rights and their security," the Nobel Peace Prize Committee announced Friday in Oslo.
"We cannot achieve democracy and lasting peace in the world until women are given the same opportunities as men to influence development at all levels of society," committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland told reporters.
