The case of former PUZ spokesperson Aleksandra Ljuba, who was sentenced to eight months in prison with a two-year probationary period by a non-final verdict of the County Court, certainly deserves a comment from our organization, and it seems to us that the wider public should also speak out.
If it weren't tragic, this verdict would have caused laughter. The state budget was damaged by 6,040 kuna for a while (Aleksandra Ljuba, in fact, subsequently paid the money into the state treasury)! Terrible! In a country where almost everything that could be stolen was stolen, the judiciary is exercising strictness on an official who wanted to help her abused friend and her children by taking them on vacation. She should have returned the money, that's for sure, but should she also receive such a punishment? Of course not.
The Kamensko, Jadrankamen, Dalmacijavino cases - to name a few - are nowhere near being resolved, even though thousands of people have lost their jobs, but the state is regularly and expeditiously prosecuting petty offenders who caused damage worth the value of a poor lunch for two or three Croatian officials.
If we continue like this, we will certainly not emerge from the crisis for the next thousand years, and going across borders will remain the best recommendation for young people we care about.
While Croatia is losing cases at the European Court due to unreasonably long court processes, the end of which many injured parties do not reach alive, it is obvious that the hand of justice quickly reaches them when they have done something wrong. Of course, if they have not managed to squeeze into the elite echelon of the chosen ones who take turns in the highest positions, in public and in front of the people they seem to be in conflict, but in fact, they are protecting each other's backs and vying for new positions ten years in advance.
Sad and too sad.
We will take Aleksandra Ljuba on vacation next year. If we survive.
